Biology 20 River Study

Red Deer River - A Healthy EcosystemRed Deer River - A Healthy Ecosystem

The Bio 20 class took a turn at playing ecologist!  The assignment recently completed had them contracted as biologists to investigate the health of the river ecosystem before a proposed water park can begin construction.  The class found that the dissolved oxygen levels are around 8 mg/L and that is a very healthy level of oxygen for such an ecosystem.  The health of the ecosystem is further supported by the finding of a number of invertebrates that are polution intolerant.  Such things as mayfly and stonefly larvae suggest that the ecosystem is in good shape since they wouldn't be found in an ecosystem that is poluted.
